Google webmaster terminology

Posted by John Mueller on 9th March 2007

Webmaster-slang can take a while to get used to. Here are some of the words and phrases that you will hear from time to time. This is not an attempt at a full glossary of all search engine specific terms but rather a very short summary of some of the more common terms. Finding more information

Posted by John Mueller on 9th March 2007

The official (and inofficial) information from Google is somewhat spread out over several websites, forums and groups. In order to make finding information easier, I have put together a collection of search engines and forms that will let you find more information.

(I have to link since I can’t insert html forms and javascript here)
The search engines are available at http://oy-oy.eu/huh/google-search/ .

How can I remove content from Google?

Posted by John Honeck on 9th March 2007

Update 4/17/07 Google’s very own Vanessa Fox has very thorough explanation of how to remove content on the Offical Webmaster Blog.

If you own the page / site and would like it removed from Google’s index then use the Remove URL tool at http://services.google.com/urlconsole/controller .

This URL removal tool will not actually “delete” the URL from the index, instead it will filter it so that it is not shown in the results for 180 days. After that time, the URL may return to the index if it is still found. The URL will continue to be crawled during this time. You will need to create a new account to use this tool (it is not tied to the general Google account). In order to remove the page (or pages) in question, you will either need to adjust the robots.txt file, the robots meta-tag of the page or make sure that the page returns code 404 (see also: Google: How can I remove content from Google’s index?).

W3C Validation and Crawlability

Posted by John Honeck on 9th March 2007

It would be foolish to state the good coding practices should not be followed for any web design effort, however as a first post in this category I wanted to temper any future claims this ascertainment from soon-to-be-famous Googler Adam Lasnik who said this on 12/21/06.
